The original piece was a third-person feature story for The Michigan Daily. The final was a second-person address to the future grandchildren of Michael Sam. The message is the same, but the writing, style and structure are all different.

Then I had another task on my hands: translate my writing to another medium. I had virtually no experience with this, but I turned to a familiar arena: ESPN's "30 for 30" trailers. What would the network's documentary film on this subject look like?

WHAT I WRITE

Until I took this course, the writing I did was primarily journalistic writing: game stories, sidebars, previews, features and news stories. These assignments forced me to think outside the box, first by repurposing an original piece of work into one of a different format, then by remediating that into a video. You can read more about the process behind this in the "How I Write" section.
